BATH ASSEMBLY ROOMS, Bennett Street, Bath Bath & NE Somerset BA1 2QH

Designed by John Wood the Younger in 1769, at a time when Bath was becoming fashionable among polite society, the Assembly Rooms were both a meeting place and venue for public functions. Bombed in 1942, they were subsequently restored and are now let to Bath & North East Somerset Council, whose Museum of Costume is in the basement

PRIOR PARK LANDSCAPE GARDEN, Ralph Allen Drive, Bath Bath & NE Somerset BA2 5AH

A beautiful and intimate 18th-century landscape garden, created by local entrepreneur Ralph Allen with advice from the poet Alexander Pope and 'Capability' Brown, and set in a sweeping valley with magnificent views of the City of Bath. The many interesting features include a Palladian Bridge and three lakes. The restoration of the garden is continuing. Prior Park College, a co-educational school, operates from the mansion (not NT)

Crowned with a balustrade and with fine views over its ancient deer park, Dyrham was built between 1691 and 1710 for William Blathwayt, William III's Secretary at War and Secretary of State. The rooms have changed little since they were furnished by Blathwayt and their contents are recorded in his housekeeper's inventory. There are many fine textiles and paintings, as well as items of blue-and-white delftware, reflecting the contemporary taste for Dutch fashions
