TRENGWAINTON GARDEN, nr Penzance Cornwall TR20 8RZ

A unique garden, perhaps more favoured for the cultivation of exotic trees and shrubs than any other on mainland Britain. The walled garden in particular contains many species which cannot be grown in the open anywhere else in the country. Intimate and closely linked to the stream running through its valley, the garden leads up to a terrace and summer-house with splendid views of Mount's Bay and The Lizard

LEVANT STEAM ENGINE, (THE), Trewellard, Pendeen, nr St Just Cornwall

In its tiny engine house perched on the cliff edge, the famous Levant beam engine is steaming again after sixty idle years. The sight, sounds and smells of this 155-year-old engine conjure up the feel of Cornwall's industrial past. ˝ml along the cliff is Geevor mine (not NT) and a mining museum

CORNISH MINES & ENGINES, Pool nr Redruth Cornwall

Cornwall's engine houses are dramatic reminders of the time when the county was a powerhouse of tin, copper and china clay mining. These two great beam engines were used for pumping water (from a depth of over 550m) and for winding men and ore. The engines were originally powered by high-pressure steam, introduced by the local engineer Richard Trevithick. Today one is rotated by electricity. Nearby is the Geological Museum of the Camborne School of Mines, where the Trust's Norris collection of minerals can be seen

The mainly granite and slatestone walls contain intimate chambers adorned with tapestries, original furniture and armour. Outside, the formal gardens overlook the richly planted valley garden below, with medieval dovecote, stewpond and Victorian summer-house, and 18th-century tower above. Cotehele Mill has been restored to working condition, and at the Quay there are interesting old buildings housing an art and craft gallery and an outstation of the National Maritime Museum. These include the formal garden with the National Collection of Day Lilies and fine summer borders, and the superb woodland garden with its outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and magnolias. Also of note is the 18th-century dovecote and the 1789 Bath Pond House. Antony has been the home of the Carew family for almost 600 years

LANHYDROCK, Bodmin Cornwall PL30 5AD

One of the most fascinating late 19th-century houses in England, full of period atmosphere and the trappings of a high Victorian country house. Although the gatehouse and north wing (with magnificent 32m-long gallery with plaster ceiling) survive from the 17th century, the rest of the house was rebuilt following a disastrous fire in 1881 with the latest in contemporary living, including central heating. The garden features a stunning collection of magnolias, rhododendrons and camellias, and offers fine colours right through into autumn
