CASTLE DROGO, Drewsteignton, nr Exeter Devon EX6 6PB This granite castle, built between 1910 and 1930 for the self-made millionaire Julius Drewe, is one of the most remarkable works of Sir Edwin Lutyens. Perched on a moorland spur above the River Teign, it commands spectacular views of Dartmoor. The interior is designed for comfortable and elegant living, with an interesting kitchen and scullery, and elaborately appointed bathrooms. COMPTON CASTLE, Marldon, Paignton Devon TQ3 1TA A magical fortified manor house, built between the 14th and 16th centuries and home to the Gilbert family for most of the last six hundred years. Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539--1583) was coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother to Sir Walter Ralegh. OVERBECKS MUSEUM AND GARDEN, Sharpitor, Salcombe Devon TQ8 8LW This elegant Edwardian house contains the eclectic collections of the scientist who lived here from 1928--37, Otto Overbeck. Among the items on show are late 19th-century photographs of the area, local shipbuilding tools, model boats, toys, shells, animals, a nautical collection and some of Mr Overbeck's drawings. SALTRAM, Plympton, Plymouth Devon PL7 1UH A remarkable survival of a George II mansion, complete with its original contents and set in an attractive landscape park. Robert Adam worked here on two occasions to create the magnificent state rooms. There is exquisite plasterwork throughout and three rooms are decorated with the original Chinese wallpaper. The house contains fine period furniture, china and pictures, including many portraits by Reynolds and Angelica Kauffmann. BUCKLAND ABBEY, Yelverton Devon PL20 6EY Tucked away in its own secluded valley above the River Tavy, Buckland was originally a small but influential Cistercian monastery. The house, which incorporates the ruins of the 13th-century abbey church, has rich associations with Sir Francis Drake and his rival, Sir Richard Grenville, and contains many interesting memorabilia from their time. There are also exhibitions on seven centuries of history at Buckland, as well as a magnificent monastic barn, craft workshops, herb garden and delightful estate walks 6ml S of Tavistock, 11ml N of Plymouth: turn off A386 ¼ml S of Yelverton
LYDFORD GORGE, The Stables, Lydford Gorge, Lydford, nr Okehampton Devon EX20 4BH This famous gorge is 1½ml long and can be viewed from a circular walk, which starts high above the river and passes through attractive oakwoods before dropping down to the spectacular 30m-high White Lady waterfall. The path then proceeds along an enchanting riverside walk through the steeply sided ravine, scooped out by the River Lyd as it plunges into a series of whirlpools, including the thrilling Devil's Cauldron At W end of Lydford village; halfway between Okehampton and Tavistock, 1ml W off A386 opposite Dartmoor Inn; main entrance at W end of Lydford; second entrance near Mucky Duck Inn
FINCH FOUNDRY, Sticklepath, Okehampton Devon EX20 2NW A fascinating 19th-century water-powered forge, which produced agricultural and mining hand tools. Still in working order with regular demonstrations, the foundry has three water wheels driving the huge tilt hammer and grindstone 4ml E of Okehampton off the A30
ARLINGTON COURT, Arlington, nr Barnstaple Devon EX31 4LP The plain exterior of this house, built in neo-classical style in 1822, does little to prepare the visitor for the astonishing rooms inside. Full of collections for every taste, many of them amassed by the eccentric and widely travelled Miss Rosalie Chichester, they include displays of model ships, costume, pewter, shells and other fascinating objects. The Trust's large collection of horse-drawn carriages is housed in the stables and there are carriage rides in the grounds, starting at the house. WATERSMEET HOUSE, Watersmeet Road, Lynmouth Devon EX35 6NT A fishing lodge, built c.1832 in a picturesque valley at the confluence of the East Lyn and Hoar Oak Water, and now a NT shop, with refreshments and information. The site has been a tea-garden since 1901 and is the focal point for several beautiful walks 1½ml E of Lynmouth, in valley on E side of Lynmouth--Barnstaple road (A39)
KNIGHTSHAYES COURT, Bolham, Tiverton Devon EX16 7RQ Designed by William Burges and begun in 1869, Knightshayes is a rare survival of his work. The rich interiors combine medieval romanticism with lavish Victorian decoration, and the smoking and billiard rooms, elegant boudoir and drawing room all give an atmospheric insight into grand country house life. The celebrated garden features a water lily pool and topiary, fine specimen trees, rare shrubs and delightful seasonal colours. KILLERTON, Broadclyst, Exeter Devon EX5 3LE The house, home of the Aclands, was rebuilt in 1778 to the design of John Johnson. Furnished as a comfortable family home, it houses the Paulise de Bush costume collection, displayed in period rooms, and a Victorian laundry. There is an introductory exhibition in the stable courtyard and an interesting 19th-century chapel. The delightful hillside garden features rhododendrons, magnolias, herbaceous borders and rare trees, as well as an ice house and early 19th-century rustic style summer-house known as The Bear's Hut. The surrounding parkland and woods offer a number of beautiful circular walks and there is a discovery centre offering varied activities. SHUTE BARTON, Shute, nr Axminster Devon EX13 7PT One of the most important surviving non-fortified manor houses of the Middle Ages. Begun in 1380 and completed in the late 16th century, then partly demolished in the late 18th century, the house has battlemented turrets, late Gothic windows and a Tudor gatehouse 3ml SW of Axminster, 2ml N of Colyton on Honiton--Colyton road (B3161)
BRANSCOMBE - THE OLD BAKERY, MANOR MILL & FORGE, Branscombe, Seaton Devon EX12 3DB The Old Bakery is a stone-built and partially-rendered building beneath thatch, which until 1987 was the last traditional working bakery in Devon. The old baking equipment has been preserved in the baking room and the rest of the building now serves as a tea-room. Manor Mill, still in working order and recently restored, is a water-powered mill which probably supplied the flour for the bakery. A LA RONDE, Summer Lane, Exmouth Devon EX8 5BD A unique 16-sided house built on the instructions of two spinster cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, on their return from a grand tour of Europe. Completed c.1796, the house contains many 18th-century contents and collections brought back by the Parminters. The fascinating interior decoration includes a feather frieze and shell-encrusted gallery which, due to its fragility, can only be viewed on closed circuit television 2ml N of Exmouth on A376

Listed Grade II*, the buildings are arranged around two courtyards and retain many original features. They are now used as a livery yard and equestrian centre, with exhibitions of equestrian art, a small carriage museum and pets' corner
