LODGE PARK, Aldsworth, near Cheltenham Gloucestershire GL54 3PP
In 1982 the Sherborne Park Estate was bequeathed to the National Trust by
Charles Dutton, 7th Lord Sherborne. The property covers over 1600ha (4000 acres)
and is a fine example of a traditional Cotswold estate, with an estate village
in the richly planted valley and higher, bleaker land to the south. Of
particular importance is Lodge Park, a unique example of a 17th-century deer
coursing park. The grandstand or lodge, an ornate stone building dating from
1635, survives and has been extensively restored. It provides fine views over
the course and surrounding parkland

the horticulturist Major Lawrence Johnston. A series of outdoor rooms, each with
a different character and separated by walls and hedges of many different
species, the garden is famous for its rare shrubs and trees, outstanding
herbaceous borders and unusual plant species from all over the world. Careful
planting has ensured a spectacular display of art and colour throughout the
seasons
