ORMESBY HALL, Ormesby, Middlesbrough Middlesbrough TS7 9AS
A mid 18th-century Palladian mansion, notable for its fine plasterwork and
carved wood decoration. The Victorian laundry and kitchen with scullery and game
larder are especially interesting, and there is a particularly beautiful stable
block (let to the Cleveland Mounted Police). A large model railway exhibition is
on show. There is also an attractive garden and holly walk

ROSEBERRY TOPPING, c/o Low Staindale, Dalby, Pickering Redcar & Cleveland
YO18 7LR
The peculiar shape of this hill is due to a geological fault and a mining
collapse earlier this century. From the summit at 320m there is a magnificent
360-degree view, which on a clear day allows the visitor to see as far as
Teesside in one direction and the Yorkshire Dales in another. Newton and Cliff
Ridge Woods skirt the northern edge of the property and Cliff Rigg quarry still
retains evidence of the extraction of 'whinstone', once used for road-building.
The area is rich in wildlife, particularly moorland birds. A spur of the
Cleveland Way National Trail runs up to the summit of Roseberry Topping
BRIDESTONES, CROSSCLIFF AND BLAKEY TOPPING, Low Staindale, Dalby, Pickering
North Yorkshire YO18 7LR
The Bridestones and Crosscliff Estate covers an area of 488ha (1205 acres)
and is a mixture of farmland, open moorland and woodland. Bridestones Moor,
named after its peculiar rock formations created under the sea during the
Jurassic period, is a SSSI and nature reserve with typical moorland vegetation,
including three species of heather, an ancient woodland estimated to date from
the end of the last Ice Age, and herb-rich meadows. The Bridestones Nature Trail
is approximately 1˝ml long and leads visitors through a range of habitats.
Blakey Topping at the northern end of Crosscliff Moor is the result of massive
erosion by glacial meltwater and today gives a superb 360-degree view from its
summit

The sheltered walled garden on the bank of the River Rye with its peacocks,
ducks, old varieties of fruit trees and clematis collection, complements this
mellow 17th-century manor house. From the magnificent oak-panelled hall, follow
three staircases to discover family rooms, the nursery, the haunted room and the
attics, with their fascinating Carlisle collection of miniature rooms fully
furnished to reflect different periods

England's most important Carthusian ruin, the remains of a 14th-century
priory. The individual cells reflect the hermit-like isolation of the Carthusian
monks; a reconstruction enables visitors to see the austere and simple
furnishings. There is a small herb garden and nature trail
