MOTTISFONT ABBEY GARDEN, HOUSE & ESTATE, Mottisfont, nr Romsey Hampshire
SO51 0LP
Set amidst glorious countryside along the River Test, this 12th-century
Augustinian priory was converted into a private house after the Dissolution, and
still retains the spring or 'font' from which its name is derived. The abbey
contains a drawing room decorated by Rex Whistler and Derek Hill's 20th-century
picture collection, but the key attraction is the grounds with magnificent
trees, walled gardens and National Collection of Roses. The estate includes
Mottisfont village and surrounding farmland and woods

HINTON AMPNER GARDEN, Bramdean, nr Alresford Hampshire SO24 0LA
Scented plants, unexpected vistas and glorious countryside combine to provide
year-round interest in this splendid 20th-century shrub garden. The garden
achieves the vision of tranquillity of its creator, Ralph Dutton, by uniting a
formal design with varied and informal plantings in pastel shades. The house,
which is lived in by a tenant family, was restored after a fire in 1960 and
displays Ralph Dutton's fine collection of Regency furniture

UPPARK, South Harting, Petersfield West Sussex GU31 5QR
A late 17th-century house, set high on the South Downs and with magnificent
views. The elegant mid-18th-century interior has been fully restored after the
disastrous 1989 fire and houses a collection of Grand Tour paintings, as well as
fine ceramics, textiles and furniture rescued from the fire. There are
interesting and evocative servants' rooms below stairs, shown as they were in
1874 when H.G. Wells's mother was housekeeper. The garden is laid out in the
Picturesque style, primarily foliage with flowering shrubs and underplanted with
bulbs, perennials and herbaceous plants. An award-winning multimedia exhibition,
sponsored by Royal SunAlliance, tells the story of the fire and subsequent
restoration.

One of the great gardens of the Sussex Weald, and still retaining much of its
distinctive family style in the historic collection of plants, shrubs and trees.
This is reflected also in the surrounding estate, with its woodland walks and
wild garden, and in the many rare and exotic species collected from overseas.
The Messel family's creative character is much in evidence in Lady Rosse's
